Southfield Lawyer files $1 Million Suit on behalf of Detroit Girl whose husband’s Stays Were Cheered by Cantrell Funeral Home

Southfield, Mich. — October 16, 2018 — A. Vince Colella, a civil rights and personal injury lawyer with Southfield-based Moss & Colella, P.C., has filed a $1 million lawsuit today on behalf of a Detroit lady whose husband’s remains were handled by the now-closed Cantrell Funeral Home on Mack Avenue in Detroit.
Based on Colella, his company’s customer, Katherleen Bonner, contracted for funeral services for her husband, Drewery Bonner, together with all the Cantrell Funeral Home on January 9, 2018. The funeral was initially scheduled to happen on January 20; on January 23, fourteen days following Cantrell Funeral Home had obtained ownership of their human body, Ms. Bonner was advised by the house’s representative that the body was”unfit to an open casket funeral.” Ms. Bonner made a few visits to the funeral house requesting to visit her husband’s figure, nevertheless, Cantrell officials denied. At some point, the funeral home’s representative persuaded her to cremate her husband.
Back in April 2018, press reports surfaced that Cantrell was storing bodies in non-refrigerated regions of the house, that had been characterized as having”deplorable conditions.” At that moment, the State of Michigan was also running an investigation.
Colella’s correspondence with Cantrell Funeral Home, starting in August 2018, concerning the issue went awry. Accordingly, the company now filed a Complaint and Demand for Jury Trial alleging (1) Negligent Mishandling of a Corpse, (2) Violation of MCL 445.903 (Deceptive Trade Practices) and (3) Breach of Contract. The suit is seeking $1 million for damages such as, pain, distress, mental anguish, and mortification.
“Despite the significant claim for damages, a household’s right to a dignified burial of the loved one cannot be quantified in dollars,” Colella said.
Colella added that information over the weekend the funeral home has been found to have stored the remains of 10 babies and a kid has raised his customer’s despair and frustration using the pattern of disregard shown by the funeral home for the families it served — and provides additional cause for speculation within the validity of her husband’s remains.
